Missions Team

Leader: Mary Cole

The Mission Statement of this team is "to promote awareness for the needs and programs of institutions; supported by the Church locally, nationally and around the world."

Each month we highlight a special mission need. Monies used to support that cause can be donated as part of the weekly collection, a special offering, or through our online donation page.

Monthly Mission

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” Mark 10:14

Did you know that 4 children die each day in the US because of abuse and neglect and that 1 in 10 children will be abused by the time, they are 18? There are 3.6 million cases of child abuse and neglect reported every year in America ... and that doesn’t include the cases that go unreported. The statistics are staggering!

Royal Family Kids Camp (RFKC) is a national program based out of CA that has served over 90,000 abused, abandoned, or neglected children since 1995. Close to 600 of those children have been served here in Chautauqua County since the Bemus Point United Methodist church started their local RFKC in 1998. It’s a week of summer camp like no other! The camp seeks to show “the least of these” the Love of Christ by providing them with one week of safe, positive, and joy-filled memories. Campers enjoy a week of unconditional love, learn about a God who loves them and leave camp with a new sense of self-esteem, knowing that they ARE worthy of love. Camp is run by a group of trained volunteers from all over the county who are thoroughly background checked.

The Camps handle all the liability insurance and the corporate fee to operate under the Royal Family name, but all other costs depend on the generosity of others. The cost to run the camp for one week is approximately $20,000, or about $700 per camper. It is the generosity of area individuals, churches, and organizations who keep camp alive. This year, now that many COVID restrictions have been lifted, the Camps will be able to be held again. Bemus Point RFKC will be Aug 9-13 and the Houghton RFKC will be July 11- 16.

During this week, children ages 6 -12 will enjoy swimming, Bible stories, drama and music, woodworking, Every Kids Birthday Party, tons of great food and lots of time with caring safe adults. A faith-based curriculum and music are shared with the children by modeling safe and loving adults. The goal of camp is to create life changing moments so these children can once again dream, believe and find new hope for their future.

We can continue to do something to make a difference, one child at a time! Our Mission Team has once again chosen Royal Family Kids Camps as our May Mission and your Communion Offering and designated checks to Missions can help change the lives of these children and interrupt the cycle abuse. Your donation can show these hurting children that they are worthy of love and that there is a God who loves them.

We work within a budget supplied by the church, and disperse funds according to what we feel is the greatest need at the time.

We have several other phases to our ministry. These include Backyard Missions, an emergency fund used to assist individuals or families needing financial help for necessities; Food for Friends, wherein we oversee the gathering of foodstuffs for the Friendly Kitchen in Dunkirk; Helping Hands, wherein a team of committed individuals do home repairs; and Mission Teams, which journey to other parts of the U.S. to work and repair damage in homes caused by natural disasters.

We welcome new members to our team.  We usually meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in the DeLand room of the church or at the Parsonage to discuss information and requests received via mail or word-of-mouth. Most requests describe the financial needs of individuals and/or organizations.
